Sophie is a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. This South Portland native lights up the room with her energetic spirit and an outgoing personality. Sophie enjoys dancing, singing like an opera singer, being funny and Pablo Picasso. "He's kind of strange and interesting at the same time," she says. Drawing, shopping, watching moves and ballet are some of this multi-talented artist's other interests. She has been coming to the Art Department for five years, and enjoys hanging out with her friends and doing her art.
Interview with the artist
Sophie, What is one thing you like about yourself?
I'm really good at painting," she says, "especially flowers. I like to use a lot of colors, and to glue things
down."
What do you struggle with?
"I have trouble expressing how I feel about things sometimes."
What is your favorite food?
"Pizza! Especially pizza with pepperoni, and onions, and a lot of sauce and cheese."
WHo do you admire?
"I admire my mom a lot, because she's an artist like I am. She does still lifes, using her camera, as well as
pencil and acrylic paints. She takes her time, and does great work. She likes to do flowers a lot."
What is your spirit animal?
"Seahorses, they're my favorite sea animal. I'm strong like they are, and they go through a lot of different
situations. They are constantly adapting to their environment. It takes me a while to get used to
different environments, I get nervous at first."
What are you most proud of?
"I am most proud of being an artist. I am also proud of having a job. I work at Amato's and make
sandwiches and salads!"
What would you do if you could do anything for one day?
"I would be a ballerina. I like the way they dance and how hard they work. It takes a lot of patience to do
what they do. Then I would play with guinea pigs all day!"
What is your dream?
"I would like to live on my own one day, and be more independent. "
What is your favorite music?
"I like rock and roll music, because it's fun music to listen to. I like pop, too. I like Elvis Presley's
Heartbreak Hotel! I like the Beatles and Rolling Stones too. "
What is your favorite quote, or do you have any advice for people?
"Never give up, and always speak up for yourself!"
Where would you like to go, where you have never visited before?
"I'd like to go to Italy some day. I like Italian food, and one of my relatives is Italian. I like pizza,
spaghetti and Italian sandwiches."
